Jenn Demke Lange, our studio manager and Quetin Randall our marketing guy have been putting their iphones through their paces making viseos of our current long term residents. sme are funny, some are serious, but all capture the essence od the artists behind the work. I should note that this project was inspired by the video of Jody Grennham Barber that was made a few years ago. Hope you enjoy.

This ten-day workshop focuses on the connection between the food we cook and the pottery we cook and serve it in.

The emphasis of the workshop is on repetition, focus, and getting the details right.

We will divide our time between the (improvised) bakeshop and the pottery studio, using the philosophy of mindfulness and creativity through practice and repetition.

In the kitchen, our focus is on artisan hearth breads. Learn how to improvise a hearth oven in your home oven, and how to mix, ferment, shape, and bake beautiful loaves using simple natural ingredients and time.

In the ceramics studio, choose a form (or 2) to practice and develop and delve into the details of scale, weight, proportion, edges, and surface.

In between we find the connections between food and pots, how they converse and strengthen each other.

The workshop will be punctuated with daily demos, tastings and discussions, all intended to make you consider the humble objects you make for daily use and consumption more deeply and fully.

VOLUNTEER WEEK

April 10th – 16th is National Volunteer week here in Canada. If it was not for our volunteers Medalta would not exist.

Our volunteers do everything from greeting guests to firing pots to teaching classes to contributing their professional expertise in a variety of capacities. Thank you for believing in Medalta and thank you for your hard work, the benefits are felt by many.

Above is an ad we placed in the Medicine Hat News to celebrate our volunteers. Below is the text of that ad, which tells the story of Jim Marshall & Jack
Forbes – two of the Friends of Medalta Society’s founding board members.

THEY STARTED IT

This has to be the ultimate volunteer story. In the mid-1970′s, these two men – Jim Marshall on the left, Jack Forbes on the right – sat under a cottonwood tree, looking at the abandoned, dilapidated Medalta Potteries factory.

The two men dreamed about someday restoring Medalta as a living, working museum and arts centre. What a crazy idea!

Well, when they realized they couldn’t shake the idea from their own heads, they actually got to work. These two men (Jim will still tell you he was “Number Two” on the scene to Jack) helped found the volunteer-based Friends of Medalta Society and led the uphill battle of saving a derelict property when no one else cared.

This year, we’re celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Friends of Medalta Society which really is a celebration of their ambition and (probably) stubborn-ness since they were the catalysts for the entire Historic Clay District project. These days, it doesn’t seem quite so crazy. We owe that to the work of all our volunteers.

And they’re not the only ones. We have many other volunteers who contribute an awful lot. So to all our volunteers, past and present, thank you. We really appreciate all that you do.

Carole Epp creates provocative ceramic sculptures that reference kitsch figurines, lowbrow art and consumer culture. These figurative tableaux explore human experience – death and love, hope and failure, family and social pressures and seek to stimulate conversation, thought and action.

Epp lives and works in Saskatoon. She has exhibited her work locally, nationally and internationally and is editor of the popular ceramic arts blog, Musing About Mud. Her mentor, Marsha Kennedy, is an artist and educator based in Regina. Kennedy teaches painting and drawing at the University of Regina while maintaining an active studio practice.

NCECA was a chance to introduce many interested people to the amazingly diverse project that it Medalta. After describing how extensive our facilities are and the diversity of programs that we offer the number one comment was, being a nonprofit, how are you funded?

It’s a very good question that requires a very long answer!

We are funded by our various earned income sources such as the production pottery and the gift shop. We are funded by individuals who are passionate about cultural preservation as well as cultural development. We are funded by groups who believe and support our mission. We are funded by the municipal, provincial, and federal government who are committed to our cultural legacy. We are funded by corporations who have the prescience to invest in such an extensive endeavor.

We are supported by groups like the Canadian Badlands Ltd. who are developing this region to become the next iconic tourism destination.

And finally we are supported by you. By the simple act of keeping up to date with what we are doing here you validating the work that we are doing.
Thank you.

Our next newsletter will feature an exciting group of artists from Ontario who will be arriving with Bruce Cochrane in May.

Until next time,

Amber Ginsburg and Robin Lambert asked artist, educators and everyone we knew to place one ounce of wet clay in an envelope and mail it to the FOREVER project with a Forever Postage stamp. The journey through the post left its impression on the material. These marks became a tale, connecting this project to our earliest writing on clay. They are now fired and the journey permanently archived. FOREVER will be on view at the Morean Arts Center for Clay, and St. Petersburg Clay Company at the Train

Spring is in the air here at Medalta. The pace in the studios has quickened as artists are getting ready for exhibitions. Les Manning in particular is getting ready for a solo exhibition here in Medicine Hat.

This is also the time of year where we overhaul our equipment and prepare for a very busy summer season. Speaking of the summer season, there is just over three weeks left until our applications are due for our summer and year-long residencies.

I was fortunate to be invited to speak at Sheridan College, The University of Waterloo, The Ontario College of Art and Design, and the Hamilton Potters, Guild. I met some exciting people, saw some great shows and we are working on some engaging programming for 2013.

We kick off our summer season with the Bruce Cochrane Invites residency. I am very excited about this group who will be here for the month of May. I had the opportunity to meet many of them during my Ontario tour in February and get the sense that this group will hit the ground running.

However, we’re not always like everyone else. Part of Medalta’s artistic philosophy is creating an atmosphere where emerging artists are able to work beside established artists.
Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations Month

And last but not least, did you know that October is “Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations” month in the Historic Clay District? If you answered yes to this question I would be very impressed! Read on to find out what we’re talking about …

Archaeologists (especially industrial ones) don’t get much respect these days. Sure, Paleontology is big, what with Jurassic Park back in the ’90′s and dinosaur beds being discovered in our own back yard.

But Historical Industrial Archaeologists are a fascinating bunch, too, if you can just get them to open up. You see, they’re usually quite shy. And really, who can blame them? Most people have a hard time seeing the magic of three industrial use occupations.

But the truth of the matter is that you can’t find that sort of thing every day. So you see, it is magical.

When we found out such a thing exists right under our feet, at Medalta (literally, right under our own feet!), we thought we better celebrate. And not just any old celebration – we figure something this big should have a whole month!

So that’s what we did. Welcome to “Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations” month.

We would really like you to help us celebrate. We promise not to take up too much of your time but we do think it would be fun. Plus, our Archaeologist will feel good knowing she brought some joy to your day.

You see, Archaeology is simply the study of humans through the stuff they left behind.

So for the next month, why not see what kind of interesting stuff we can leave for future Archaeologists?

Now, we’re not talking littering of course, but wouldn’t it be fun if that Medalta coffee mug you hid in your back yard in October 2010 ended up being a major archaeological find in 3010? Write your name on it so they’ll know it’s you, of course.

If you don’t yet have a Medalta mug, our gift shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Ceramic lasts nearly forever so we’re your best bet at becoming an archaeological celebrity in 1,000 years. We also have bowls, plates, salt & pepper shakers and other ceramic treasures. If you don’t want to bury them, they’re good to use every day too.

Our own celebration of “Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations” month will take place in Medalta Potteries’ museum gallery. We have our very own Archaeologist – Talva Jacobson – who has only asked that she be able to work by herself (the shyness, you see). Unless, of course, you have some interesting information to share. In that case, be sure to visit.

Although it means we have to close the museum galleries for October, we’re sure you’ll understand. It is her month, after all. And you’ll be pretty busy buying mugs in our gift shop anyways.

If you do decide to participate in “Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations” month, send us an email with your address so we can mail you an official certificate. Your Archaeology buddies will be impressed.

So we live in Medicine Hat which means nothing exciting ever happens here, right?

I mean, it’s not like Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips just stops in or anything.

“In the Red” is a budgetary term originating from the traditional practice of showing negative numbers in red ink.

In 2010 five million dollars was cut from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts budget and we must now ask ourselves how these cuts will affect the cultural voice of Alberta. In the Red will explore the impact of these cuts on an artist’s ability to create; in essence how do you craft something out of nothing?

THE DIG

In 1986, Medalta Potteries was recognized as a National Historic Site because of its industrial heritage significance. And for the next 25 years we alternated between defending that decision and making sure everyone knew that fact. It wasn’t always easy to explain why, but enough people believed Medalta was significant and helped it continue.

And now here we are, one year into the second decade of a new millennium, proving exactly why this facility was worth saving twenty-five years ago.

In early October, we began an archaeological dig in Medalta’s old kiln room. The archaeologist on site – Talva Jacobson – has been watching this site for some time now. She knew it was significant from a scientific standpoint, but had to wait until it had aged appropriately (and so did she!). We’ll explain more on that soon enough.

This newsletter is dedicated to The Dig. But don’t worry, we’re not going to kill you with all that technical jargon (most of which isn’t even understood by Talva, whose favourite word is fabulous!). The Dig – and all of Archaeology, really – is a story of those who came before. It will reach far beyond our community and tie Medicine Hat into the past four hundred years in the United States. And probably even back across The Pond.

I want to tell you this is a fabulous story, that it’s wonderful and you’re not going to want to miss it because, of all the things I’ve told you over the past two-plus years, this is probably closest to that reality. But I can’t stand words like that and I’m sure this story can stand up under its own power anyways.

We do have events (art exhibition openings, craft markets, concert) coming up as well but we’re going to move them over to the left-hand column for this issue. Get in touch with us if you have any questions. And as always, we still have an artists’ newsletter.

So thanks for coming. Read on.

MEDALTA THE BIG-BOX

The story of Medalta and the industrial clay boom in Medicine Hat represents the beginning of our community. But when we zoom out and talk about the pottery industry on a broader level, we find that this was actually the end of what Talva (and other Archaeologists, to be fair) calls Folk Pottery. And so I guess we have a bit of a paradox – Medicine Hat was actually founded on the tail end of a very dominant industry.

As a quick aside, I actually had the thrill of reading Talva’s thesis. I won’t tell you the title because it’s probably longer than this newsletter, but it was genuinely interesting … if you’re into that sort of thing. Which I am (and I hope you are too).

Anyways, the term Folk Pottery needs a bit of clarification. In Talva’s thesis, she identifies two streams of ceramics: Fine Art on one hand, and Folk on the other. Folk Pottery doesn’t necessarily need to be small (Medalta is a Folk Pottery, for example) just as an Industrial Pottery doesn’t necessarily need to be big. Her interest with Medalta is in Folk Pottery, which was inexpensive and with a primary focus on utility. Now, back to the point.

Talva essentially explains how the Folk Pottery industry grew through the process of modernization, as it relates to industry. I’ll keep it short because I don’t want you all unsubscribing as I try and re-write a 169 page thesis on pottery. But see if you can spot where Medalta fits in.

People living in the Traditional stage started out creating simple ware for themselves and ended with the creation of a cottage industry, where they were creating ware for their immediate community. It’s kind of like making toques for your kids and eventually making enough to sell on Etsy.

The next step is when the industry takes off and pottery begins to exist as a product on its own, produced for profit. Phase three is when actually knowing how to be a potter isn’t all that important, strangely. Pottery has now become a business and those who wanted to make money creating pottery could hire someone who did know how.

The final stage is high mass consumption. Production now needs to be ramped up to a pretty massive scale to meet demand, which needs pretty big manufacturing plants to sustain it.

Of course, with the emergence of these factories, the skill required was reduced. Processes were generally automated (keeping in mind that our vision today of automation includes less wooden wheels. But the concept was generally the same), tasks were separated so that the person mixing the clay probably couldn’t make a pot and the one making the pot probably didn’t know too much about firing.

It’s a lot like the emergence of Wal-Mart and the big-box consumer movement that we’re currently in the middle of. For better or worse, it has been argued that this style of retail came at the expense of local retailers in our communities’ downtowns. Just as traditional potters were replaced by mass-production facilities.

Of course, as we all know, folk pottery has come a long way down from its apex at the turn of the 20th Century. And the reason the pottery industry is talked about today with such a nostalgic air is that it was once an empire of sorts. I think that has been forgotten, perhaps because pottery’s relevance in our day-to-day lives is less obvious than in decades past.

We always had a strong hunch that Medicine Hat was tied to this history. We just didn’t have much evidence. This dig will solve a lot of puzzles.

WHAT IT ALL MEANS

Aside from what this all means to Medalta and Medicine Hat, we should address what this means to the scientific community.

Industrial Archaeology is a relatively new discipline – especially as it relates to ceramics. As I mentioned in the introduction, Talva had to wait for Medalta to age appropriately before she did her work. Of course, we also had to wait for Talva to age as well. When Industrial Archaeology was born, she was basically a delinquent.

Although there’s no official number of years, the weight of anything needs to be absorbed before work can begin. We need to see if something can stand the test of time.

Think of it in terms of transcendent records (I’m talking vinyl here). For example, The Beatles’ Abbey Road was great when it was initially released in 1969 and has since become legendary. If you need evidence, just have a look at what The Beatles did to iTunes when they finally became available there this week.

Now, stop humming Maxwell’s Silver Hammer for a minute so we can get back to our story.

As such a new discipline, the work done here will provide a template for future industrial archaeological research. What this means is that industrial archaeologists around North America will rely on data collected at this dig as they do their own research.

Of course, that is really only interesting to archaeologists. But it provides a solid foundation from which we can work and it will influence how we communicate going into the future.

Between this dig, our artists in residence program and our working pottery, we really are in the middle of some very exciting times.

With all this talk about The Dig, it’s only fair that we properly introduce you to Talva Jacobson, since she’s pretty much running the show. Oh, and by the way, don’t believe anyone if they try and tell you Talva doesn’t know archaeology – she’s a pretty big geek for it …

She started out as an art student at Red Deer College before moving to the University of Lethbridge where she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture & Pottery. In Lethbridge, she got turned on to Archaeology by one of her Professors which lead her to Memorial University of Newfoundland where she completed a Master of Arts (Archaeology).

The great thing about her road to Medalta is that she actually started as a potter, which gives her a different perspective from most other Archaeologists. It’s kind of like hiring a Contractor who grew up as a Carpenter first.

She loves describing Archaeology and The Dig as fabulous and is a supporter of Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations Month by simple virtue of being the only one here who actually knows what it means. Which reminds me …

DETAILED STRATIGRAPHY EXPLAINED

In our last newsletter (and in the Medicine Hat News, believe it or not), we ran a piece titled “October is Detailed Stratigraphy of Three Industrial Use Occupations Month in the Historic Clay District.” If you didn’t catch it / didn’t understand it, here’s a bit of an explanation (for what it’s worth … probably not much).

With The Dig underway and construction of our new Gallery not yet completed, we had to close the museum to the public. There was just nowhere for you to go if you came down.

Since we didn’t want to just leave you out in the cold (literally, these days), we thought we’d have a bit of fun. We wanted to involve everyone in the Archaeological process somehow and since there was little chance to be involved in our dig, we thought we would try and connect you to future Archaeologists.

So we asked you to bury something in the hope that an Archaeologist of the future digs it up. I promised certificates for anyone who participated and actually had a few people take me up on the offer. The certificates were promptly mailed out and are probably hanging very proudly on a wall somewhere.

There you have it. It was probably equally received with raised eyebrows and laughter (by those few who actually got it). It was fun though and we have decided to extend it.

If you want to become a Potential Future Archaeological Celebrity (or if you just want to see if I’m actually sending out certificates for something so absurd), send me an email with your mailing address. It makes a great gift (do you believe that?).
